《黑色的星期天》當時被人們稱為「魔鬼的邀請書」，至少有100 人因聽了它而自殺，因而曾被查禁長達13年之久。關於作曲家本人創作曲子的動機，連精神分析家和心理學家也無法作出圓滿的解釋。
